pet peeve - credit or debit?

Why is it that when I use my credit card, some check out scanner assumes that I have a debit card and ask for my PIN number? Then you have to press cancel for it to process it as a credit card. I think I have earned enough years of building a good credit history that I won't need a debit card. It is really annoying.
